Dr Frakking completed a PhD on, ‘The use of cervical auscultation in the diagnosis of aspiration in children.’ Aspiration occurs when you swallow food or fluids down the wind pipe (e.g. trachea) instead of the food pipe (e.g. oesophagus). Swallowing food/fluids incorrectly can cause short and long-term damage to your child’s lungs; and may result in refusal of feeding. Early detection of a swallowing disorder is recommended for safe and enjoyable mealtimes.
Practical workshops on the use of cervical auscultation in infants and children for speech pathologists are planned in the future. Further information on workshops will be shared here.
